When you’re looking at seed catalogs or browsing the store shelves, look for these key words to help you pick your best tomato!

Growth habit: indeterminate

Indeterminate tomato varieties grow very tall - over 6’, with some as tall as 20’! Because they grow so tall, these tomato plants will require heavy-duty staking or a strong trellis to support the plants. These are best suited to growing in the ground or in large raised beds, but are too large to be grown in pots. They will produce tomatoes throughout the season, so are a perfect choice if you want fresh tomatoes to enjoy until frost.

Seed type: heirloom or open-pollinated

Heirloom and open-pollinated tomatoes will produce seeds that are “true to type”, meaning that the seeds saved from these will produce identical plants in the next season.

Tomato type: cherry or salad
