When you’re looking at seed catalogs or browsing the store shelves, look for these key words to help you pick your best tomato!
Growth habit: determinate
Determinate varieties, also called ‘bush’ tomatoes, grow to about 3-4’ tall. They do not require support, but can benefit from a compact cage or trellis. These tomatoes produce all of their fruit within a short time, usually two to four weeks. By ripening within a short time you can be sure to have enough produce for canning or processing, without having to wait weeks to build up enough tomatoes (and risk the first ones going bad by the time you have enough).
Seed type: heirloom or open-pollinated
Heirloom and open-pollinated tomatoes will produce seeds that are “true to type”, meaning that the seeds saved from these will produce identical plants in the next season.
Tomato type: paste
‘Principe Borghese’ sounds like it would be a great addition to your garden!
